Albert Terrien de la Couperie was a French orientalist, specialising in comparative philology with a particular emphasis between the Chinese characters and the early Akkadian hieroglyphics.
His works suggested that the basis of the Yijing consist of fragmentary notes, chiefly lexical in character, bearing a close resemblance to the syllabaries of Chaldea. His theories were challenged by J. Legge and G. Schlegel, especially his theories of the origins of Chinese civilization, the comparison between Chinese characters, monosyllabic and Chaldean words, polysyllabic, and the Babylonian origins of the sixty year ganzhi cyclical calendar system.
With these cautions in mind, his work remains of interest with regard to suggested interpretations, analysis of material history and Western developments.
This reedition includes the update of 384 transliterated Chinese terms into modern pinyin. The five supplementary annexes are provided to facilitate the reading of the text, including the bibliography and list of over 100 work cited.

Joseph Edkins was a British Protestant missionary who spent 57 years in China. He was a Sinologue, a linguist, a translator, and a philologist specialized in Chinese religions. His work suggests that the hexagrams are the vehicle for the expression of a philosophy, the characters became the basis of the national literature and the names repositories of ideas springing out of the dual philosophy of yin and yang. From there, the philosophy of two contrasted elements in a single antithesis expanded itself into the system of the five elements. A philosophy whose symbols were linear became a philosophy whose symbols were circular and linear. Mr. Edkins provides in these few essays a fascinating approach that reminds that of Iulian Shchutskii's Researches on the I Ching (1979) and benefits to be read along with the analyzis of Terrien de la Couperie's The Yijing (1892). This reedition provides the update of 454 transliterated Chinese terms into modern pinyin and appendices, including a Biography and a list of references.

Kaemon Takashima (高島 嘉右衛門) is a fascinating multi-facetted individual of the Meiji Era. He was a business trained in the Yijing school of Arai Hakuga.  His societal network was vast and he regularly divined for government officials. His interpretations of the Yijing span from events pertaining to individuals to societal evolution. Several of his predictions are well-known, including the major earthquake of the Ansei period that hit Tokyo in 1855, the Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War and his own death.
This book, translated by Sugiura Shigetake is an abridged version of the 10-volumes original, is the only one known of the Yijing as understood in Japan. The work of Shigetake stands unique as a Japanese interpretation of the Yijing. It is also a work interspersed with historical events and customs showing a rare insight of the Japanese culture of the time. Finally, the practical examples are invaluable for Yijing students.
Being an abridgement, several techniques are assumed to be known. One should consult the annexes and additional works. To further the studies on the Yijin, one may consult Chang, Tuck. Unveiling the Mystery of I Ching which I believe to be a major work on the topic. The French translation of Mr. Philastre, Yijing. Yichuan et Benyi are also unique in being the only present ones providing two major commentaries.
This reedition is a significant reorganisation. It includes the insertion of the corresponding Chinese text, the cross-verification of terms and the update of 178 transliterated Chinese expressions into modern pinyin. Ten supplementary annexes have been provided to facilitate the understanding of the text.

Charles de Harlez was a scholar and sinologist in the 19th century. His works includes more than 70 books and over 150 articles. We present here a series of eleven articles, translated into English for the first time, covering his thougths on the Yijing. The essays provide material on the origin, nature and interpretation of the text. Essay Nine further provides what Mr. de Harlez calls a 'restored' text and commentary. Essays Ten and Eleven are of significant value in that it is one of the rare approach using Manchu text. We also find a study of the Yijing in the context of the 7th century B.C. and within the context of the Lunyu.
The translation includes the update of 307 transliterated Chinese terms into modern pinyin.
