Description:

T. Watters offers us through the Guide to the Tablets in a Temple of Confucius a fascinating and unique work. Almost no Western studies have been made of these Confucian Tablet’s layout. Through the laborious work of T. Watters we now have the arrangement, names, and bibliographical entry of major Confucian scholars gathered in one book.
The work provides us with about 170 Confucianists, divided into several groups, among which we find the Sipei (四配) or Four Associates; the Shierzhe (十二哲), The Twelve Men of Genius; the Xianxian (先賢) or Former “Worthies”; and the Zongsheng ci (宗聖祠) or Temple to Ancestors glorified as Sages. Their divisions follows a importance of the scholar and is transcribed in a spatial layout.
The reedition of this work removes transliteration barriers by providing all terms in pinyin. This was not an easy task as we ended up with updating 1742 terms. This Guide provides the groundwork to further the study of these ‘canonized’ Confucianists, the evaluation of the choices made, and the interesting design of the layout.
This edition includes the list of works by T. Watters and a list of over 250 references generated from the text or added through the process of editorial verification.
